Multi-layer co-extrusion lines combine distinct PE material layers in one pass to improve pipe strength, barrier properties, and cost efficiency. Learn how Kairun Machinery’s co-extrusion technology elevates PE pipe performance.
In a multi-layer co-extrusion line, several single-screw extruders feed molten polymer simultaneously into a co-extrusion die. The die distributes each melt stream into concentric layers that fuse while still molten, before entering the vacuum sizing tank.
A typical 3-layer structure includes an outer UV-stabilized layer for environmental protection, a middle PE100 or PE100-RC structural layer for pressure rating, and an inner smooth layer for fluid compatibility. Because layers bond during melt fusion without adhesives in PE-to-PE configurations, the pipe maintains a homogeneous wall with no delamination risk.
The middle structural layer uses high-performance PE100 or PE100-RC, while outer and inner layers use cost-effective base resins. This allows the pipe to meet PN16 and PN20 ratings without increasing wall thickness, reducing material consumption per meter. Kairun Machinery’s co-extrusion dies use spiral mandrel distributors to ensure uniform layer thickness and consistent burst pressure along the full pipe length.
For gas distribution and permeation-sensitive applications, an EVOH barrier layer can be integrated between PE layers. EVOH reduces hydrocarbon and oxygen permeation by orders of magnitude compared to virgin PE. Our lines support adhesive tie layers between EVOH and PE, ensuring permanent interlayer adhesion even under thermal cycling.
The outer layer can be compounded with carbon black, UV stabilizers, or chemical-resistant modifiers to withstand sunlight, soil acidity, and external chemical exposure. This protects the structural core from degradation, extending design service life beyond 50 years in buried installations.
Multi-layer co-extrusion allocates expensive high-performance resins only where needed. A 3-layer pipe may use 20% PE100-RC in the structural middle layer and 80% standard PE80 in the outer and inner layers, delivering PE100-class performance at significantly lower material cost. Our gravimetric dosing systems maintain layer ratios within ±0.5% tolerance.
PE100-RC compounds in the structural layer improve resistance to slow crack growth and rapid crack propagation. Combined with a tougher outer layer, the pipe better handles point loads from rocky backfill and installation damage—a critical factor for trenchless and HDD installations.
Our standard multi-layer co-extrusion lines include multiple single-screw extruders for independent melt processing, a co-extrusion die with spiral mandrel for uniform layer distribution, a vacuum sizing tank for diameter calibration, a spray cooling tank for gradual stress-free cooling, a synchronized haul-off machine, and an automated cutter and stacker. The PE pipe extrusion line is controlled via a centralized PLC with HMI, allowing operators to monitor layer ratios, melt temperatures, and line speed in real time.
Typical applications include natural gas distribution pipes with EVOH barrier, potable water supply pipes with food-grade inner layer, mining slurry pipes with abrasion-resistant inner layer, geothermal heating pipes with oxygen barrier, and large-diameter drainage pipes with structural foam core.
Multi-layer co-extrusion lines enhance PE pipe performance through purpose-built layer structures: a structural core for pressure rating, functional outer layers for environmental protection, and optional barrier layers for permeation control. This delivers higher mechanical performance, longer service life, and lower material cost compared to single-layer extrusion.
Kairun Machinery provides turnkey multi-layer co-extrusion lines engineered for consistent layer distribution, precise dosing, and reliable long-term operation. Our technical team works directly with manufacturers to configure line layouts and process parameters based on specific pipe specifications.
A: Single-layer extrusion uses one extruder and one material for the entire pipe wall. Multi-layer co-extrusion uses two or more extruders feeding a shared die, producing concentric layers of different materials, each optimized for a specific function.
A: Our standard configurations support 2 to 5 layers, including PE-to-PE structures and PE-EVOH-PE barrier structures with adhesive tie layers. Custom configurations are available for specialized applications.
A: While initial equipment investment is higher, multi-layer co-extrusion reduces material cost per meter by using premium resins only in functional layers. For most high-specification products, material savings offset the equipment cost within the first year.
A: In many cases, yes. Kairun Machinery can retrofit additional extruders, co-extrusion dies, and control upgrades to existing lines, provided the original extruder capacity and cooling line length are sufficient for the target output.
A: Our lines cover pipe diameters from 16 mm to 2000 mm, with output capacities ranging from 150 kg/h to 2500 kg/h depending on configuration.
